The spread comes down to scope. Some figures assume a plain rectangle in one color on good soil. Others include tear-out, extra base on clay, a border in a second color, steps and sealing. When you compare bids, compare the scope line by line, not just the per-foot number.

Cost by patio size

Angi's Indianapolis data gives these ranges by size.

Minimums matter on small jobs. A contractor with a $7,000 minimum3 will price a 100 sq ft pad well above the per-foot average, so small patios often cost more per square foot than large ones.

Stamped vs. broom finish vs. exposed aggregate

If the pattern isn't the point, a plainer finish can cut the price substantially.

TheFatBook's Indianapolis index shows a similar gap at a larger size: about $3,604–$4,407 for a 400 sq ft plain concrete patio and about $6,500–$7,951 for 400 sq ft stamped5.

What pushes the price up

Pattern, color, site prep and sealing are the main things that move a stamped patio up or down the range.

  • Pattern and color. Angi's Indianapolis averages run from about $9 per sq ft for a one-color brick pattern to $14 for multi-color cobblestone, $16 for wood plank and $18–$30 for custom logos or inlays1.
  • Tear-out. Breaking out and hauling an old slab adds about $2–$6 per sq ft4.
  • Labor. Angi puts concrete labor at about $50–$100 per hour in Indianapolis1. Stamping has to happen in a short window while the concrete sets, so crews need enough hands on pour day.
  • Borders, steps and levels. Each adds forming and hand work1.
  • Permits. Angi notes permits of about $140–$500 when work such as a driveway or sidewalk connects to public property. Backyard patios often need none in Indianapolis, but your contractor should confirm1.
  • Project minimums. See above. They hit small patios hardest3.

Upkeep: the cost after the pour

Stamped concrete needs resealing about every 2–3 years in Indianapolis, at about $1–$3 per sq ft each time.

Repairs for cracks, chips or faded color run about $300–$1,0001.

For a 300 sq ft patio, that's about $300–$900 per reseal. Over ten years, three to five reseals add roughly $900–$4,500 (our arithmetic from Angi's figures). Build that into your comparison with pavers. Our pavers vs. stamped concrete guide compares the two side by side.

Early care matters too. The Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association recommends moist curing (ideally for seven days), applying a penetrating sealer about 30 days after placement and before the first frost, and keeping deicers off new concrete for the first year6.

How to get an accurate quote

Four steps that make estimates easier to compare.

Read moreShow less: How to get an accurate quote
  1. Measure the area, then use the size table above to set a low and high budget.
  2. Ask each contractor to put the same items in writing: slab thickness, base depth, reinforcement, pattern and colors, control-joint layout, sealer, tear-out and cleanup.
  3. Ask whether the mix is air-entrained. Federal Highway Administration guidance treats entrained air as essential for concrete exposed to freezing, thawing and deicers7.
  4. Get a written contract. Indiana requires one for home-improvement work over $1508.
